French hot-air balloon festival sets new world records

 

The Lorraine Mondial Air Ballons hot-air balloon festival near Metz set two world records, filling the sky with a record 408 balloons at one time and lining up 391 for take-off. The 10-day festival, which ended Sunday, drew more than 350,000 people.

Air France to slash thousands of jobs

Two armed men robbed the Kronometry luxury watch store in Cannes on Wednesday, the latest in a spate of thefts in the French Riviera resort town. The theft takes place three days after a €103 million jewellery heist at the nearby Carlton hotel.

Fugitive Kazakh tycoon arrested in southern France

 

Mukhtar Ablyazov, a Kazakh businessman and former minister accused of embezzling $6 billion from a Kazakh bank, was arrested near Nice on Wednesday. Ablyazov fled exile in the UK last year after being sentenced to prison for contempt of court.
